Ron Van Clief's Chinese associates knew him as "The Black Dragon." A Vietnam veteran and former New York police officer, he holds a doctorate in theology and has starred in films, as well as being an author and a member of the World Martial Arts Hall of Fame. Since he was first introduces to the martial arts as a youth, Van Clief has studied jujutsu, ninjutsu and Chines goju. He furthered his martial arts knowledge while he was a Marine, studying Okinawa-te and kenpo during a tour of duty in Okinawa and the arts of kali and arnis when we was transferred to the Philippines.
During the course of his martial arts career, Van Clief has competed in more than 900 tournaments, including point-fighting, kata and kickboxing competitions. Before retiring in 1994, he won 10 U.S. championships and five world titles. Van Clief even fought in the Ultimate Fighting Championship 4 when he was 51. Now a 10th degree red belt in Chinese goju, Van Clief focuses on teaching the martial arts in seminars around the world.
