75 Down Blocks - Refining Karate Technique
Every style of karate, tae kwon do, kung fu or other martial art includes the down block as part of its kata, or forms. The forms are similar enough that martial artists will recognize them as down blocks, even though the specific block looks different from their own style. Taken together, these blocks make up a "universe" of hundreds of different variations on the basic down block.
75 Down Blocks explores this universe to look for the underlying principles common to all down blocks. Author Rick Clark examines seventy-five different possible variations on the basic down block - with examples of how to use the down block to defend against twelve kinds of attacks - from wrist grabs and punches to kicks and attacks with a stick. By looking at this movement in such great detail, and by learning how it can be adapted across a broad range of martial arts styles and situations, you can both build your repertoire of down blocks and achieve a greater understanding of the underlying principles of martial arts.
Rick Clark began studying judo in 1962. With over 40 years of training and teaching experience in a number of martial arts systems, he has taught at both the school and university levels. He has developed an international reputation as a skilled martial artist and seminar instructor, and teaches regularly in Australia, Canada, England, Ireland, Scotland, Norway, Sweden, New Zealand, and the United States.
